Beta-Blockers

Beta Blockers

Beta-Blockers regulate your heart rate by blocking adrenaline to decrease activity of your heart.

We've asked (our favourite) doctor Dr Christian Jessen

to explain Beta-Blockers and the treatments available

What are beta blockers?

A beta blocker, is a class of medications that are particularly used to manage abnormal heart rhythms, and to protect the heart from a second heart attack after a first heart attack. They slow down your heart and ease its pumping strength. They are prescribed for several different conditions including high blood pressure, angina, some abnormal heart rhythms, heart, anxiety, migraine, glaucoma, and overactive thyroid symptoms. They are also sometimes known as beta antagonists, beta-adrenergic blocking agents, or beta-adrenergic antagonists.

How do they work?

Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. When you take beta blockers, your heart beats more slowly and with less force, thereby reducing blood pressure. They block the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline.
