Azithromycin is one of a group of antibiotics known as macrolides, used to treat bacterial infections such as Chlamydia.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. Azithromycin works by killing the bacteria, as it contains macrolide antibiotics.

Despite the fact that Chlamydia can often have no symptoms, it’s important to be checked and treated quickly. When left untreated, the infection can spread and cause further inflammation, and sometimes can even lead to infertility.

Treating the infection with Azithromycin is quick and simple and prevents the infection from being spread to more people.

Azithromycin is a prescription-only medication. Always follow the advice of your doctor and read the patient information leaflet provided in the medication packet.

The tablets should be taken as a single daily dose and should be swallowed with a drink of water, with or without food.

Azithromycin contains the active ingredient of azithromycin (as azithromycin monohydrate), in doses of either 250mg or 500mg per tablet/capsule. Your doctor will know which dose is suitable for the condition you are trying to treat. Although Chlamydia is its main use, Azithromycin can also be used to treat other ailments (as it’s an antibiotic).

When treating Chlamydia, the dose is 1000mg taken as a single dose for one day only. When treating anything else, it could be administered over 3 or 5 days; your doctor will be able to advise.

If you forget to take your Azithromycin tablet then you should take it as soon as you remember. If you are taking it for longer than a single dose, and it’s nearly time for your next one then do not double up to make up for the forgotten dose.

If you take more Azithromycin than you should, then you should contact a doctor or pharmacist immediately as the effects can include hearing loss (reversible), nausea and diarrhoea.

Before taking Azithromycin, you should always first consult your doctor. You should not take Azithromycin if any of the following apply to you:

    • if you are allergic to azithromycin, any other macrolide or any of the ingredients of this medicine.

Your prescription of Azithromycin may also be affected by a number of other factors, so you should make your doctor aware if any of the following apply:

    • have ever had a serious allergic reaction
    • have severe kidney problems
    • have liver problems
    • have myasthenia gravis (localised muscle weakness)
    • have been diagnosed with a neurological disease
    • have mental, emotional or behavioural problems
    • you are aware of ever being diagnosed to have prolonged QT interval
    • are aware that you have a slow or irregular heartbeat, or reduced heart function (heart failure)
    • know that you have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood

Like many medications with active ingredients, Azithromycin can affect or be affected by other medicines. Particular medications that you may experience this with include the following:

    • theophylline (used to treat asthma)
    • warfarin or any similar medicine to prevent blood clots
    • ergotamine, dihydroergotamine (used to treat migraine)
    • ciclosporin (used to suppress the immune system)
    • colchicine (used for gout and familial Mediterranean fever)
    • antacids (for indigestion)
    • cisapride (for stomach problems)
    • terfenadine (used to treat hay fever)
    • medicines for irregular heart beat (called antiarrhythmics)
    • alfentanil (used for narcosis)

If you are taking any of the above medications, then you should make your doctor aware so that they can advise whether or not Azithromycin will be the best course of action for you.

You should consult your doctor before taking this medication if you are pregnant or planning to be. There is not enough research about how Azithromycin can affect unborn babies so doctors will not usually prescribe it, and will therefore recommend you another course of treatment.

Like with a lot of drugs, Azithromycin can be passed into breast milk and is therefore not recommended for use by those who are currently breastfeeding. If you do take it, you will have to suspend nursing during treatment and then you can resume again two days after stopping the drug.

The most common side effects of using Azithromycin include:

    • diarrhoea or loose stools
    • headache
    • being or feeling sick
    • abdominal pain
    • changes in white blood cell count in blood tests
    • low blood bicarbonate

If you do experience one or more of these side effects and they persist or worsen, then inform your doctor right away. You should also contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects.

You can safely buy Azithromycin online at UK Meds. You will first need to have an online consultation with a medical doctor before your order will be supplied. The online consultation will ensure that Azithromycin is the right medication for your medical condition.
