What is Furosemide?
Furosemide belongs to a group of medications called diuretics (or water tablets) which prevents too much salt being absorbed by your body, and instead allows it to pass through in your urine. This can effectively help to lower blood pressure and treat hypertension.
How does Furosemide work?
Your kidneys work very hard at filtering out water, salts and waste from your blood. Whilst most of the salts and water are reabsorbed into your blood, some are left with the waste products which forms urine. How diuretics work is by stopping the salts and water from being reabsorbed back into your blood, so that more is instead passed through into your urine. This will cause you to need to urinate more often.
By getting rid of these extra salts, it removes them from your bloodstream. This decreases the amount of work your heart has to do and so in doing that, will lower your blood sugar.
Who can and can't take Furosemide?
Furosemide can be taken by most children and adults. It can also be given to babies.
It is important to note that Furosemide is not suitable for everyone. If you are going to take Furosemide, you must inform your doctor if you have:
- had an allergic reaction to furosemide or any other medicine in the past
- low blood pressure
- dehydration
- dry mouth
- dark urine
- liver disease
- diabetes
- difficulty peeing
- a disorder of your adrenal glands called Addison's disease
- gout
- an intolerance to, or you cannot absorb, some sugars such as lactose
How to take Furosemide?
It is recommended to take Furosemide daily and in the morning. There are times however, when you are required to take it twice a day. If this is the case then it is recommended to take it in the morning then again at lunchtime. Occasionally, you take it every other day. Your dosage will be outlined by your prescriber.
You must not take furosemide too late in the day or at night, otherwise you may have to wake up to go to the toilet. Your doctor or pharmacist will discuss the best times for you to take your medicine.
How do I buy Furosemide online?
