More Information

Isotrexin Gel is an effective treatment for mild to moderate acne. It can be used on its own or with other creams, gels or antibiotic tablets.

Isotrexin Gel contains the active ingredient isotretinoin, a medicine that belongs to the group of retinoids. Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A.

Isotretinoin, when applied to the skin, is thought to loosen the cells in the skin’s surface, helping to unblock pores to allow the skin’s natural oil producing glands to function normally.

Isotretinoin also increases the turnover of the skin cells, aiding in the natural exfoliation of the outer layers of the skin. This also helps in unblocking pores and decreases the formation of blackheads and spots.

Isotretinoin helps in reducing the inflammation in the skin.

The main benefit of using Isotrexin Gel is its ability to treat acne by loosening the cells in the surface of the skin to help unblock the pores, which allow the natural oil producing glands to function normally.

Isotrexin gel is effective in decreasing the formation of blackheads and spots and in reducing the inflammation of the skin.

Apply Isotrexin gel once or twice daily as instructed by your doctor.

Thoroughly wash and dry your skin, and completely remove any make-up before applying the gel. This will help the medication to work better.

Put a thin layer of the gel on the affected skin using your fingertips to smooth it in. apply the gel to all areas of the skin that have acne and not just each spot.

You only need to apply a thin layer of gel. Do not use too much, especially when the gel could run into your eyes or build up in folds of skin. The use of more gel does not hasten the clearing up of your acne. Do not apply Isotrexin gel the areas of the skin that are irritated, such as burns, cuts, or sunburns, as it could make the irritation worse.

Use Isotrexin gel only on your skin, away from your mouth, lips, and eyes.

Apply Isotrexin gel to the affected areas of the skin once or twice daily, according to the instructions of your doctor.

Like all medicines, Isotrexin gel can cause some unwanted side effects, although not everyone who uses it will get the side effects. The side effects of Isotrexin gel usually go away when you stop using it.

The common side effects of Isotrexin Gel include the following:

  • Skin itching or irritation
  • Dry skin
  • Skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight
  • Red skin or peeling
Possible Side Effects of Isotrexin Gel
Skin irritation at the application site.
Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.
Changes in skin pigmentation.
Abdominal pain or diarrhoea.

Isotrexin Gel can sometimes cause severe skin reactions. Stop using the gel and see your doctor right away if you experience the following:

  • Severe burning
  • Peeling
  • Itchiness
  • Redness

In some cases, it is possible to have serious allergic reactions to Isotrexin gel.  Contact a doctor straight away or go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital if you experience the warning signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as:

  • Skin rash that may include red, itchy, blistered, swollen or peeling skin
  • Tightness in the chest and throat
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty in breathing or talking
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, lips, or throat

If you experience any other side effects that you believe are associated with your use of Isotrexin gel, contact your doctor immediately.

Isotrexin gel is flammable and should not be used near any naked flame or source of heat, or while smoking.

You may experience temporary stinging or a feeling of warmth in the skin when you first start using Isotrexin gel. When used correctly, Isotrexin gel will make your skin slightly red, like a mild sunburn, but there is no need to worry because this condition will settle with time.

If you experience severe redness, irritation of the skin, or peeling, you should apply Isotrexin gel less frequently or stop using it temporarily. If the irritation continues, you should stop using the gel completely and see your doctor.

Isotrexin gel may increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV light. Protect the treated skin from sunlight with clothing or sunscreen while using it. Do not use sunbeds or sunlamps.

Isotrexin gel should not be used in children under 121 years of age or who have acne before reaching puberty.

It should not be used by people who are allergic to it or to any of its inactive ingredients.

Isotrexin gel should be used with caution in the following:

  • People with rosacea or eczema
  • People with a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Sensitive areas of the skin such as the neck

Isotrexin gel should not be used during pregnancy or by women who plan to get pregnant. If a woman becomes pregnant while using Isotrexin gel, the treatment should be discontinued.

There is insufficient information on the excretion of Isotrexin in human milk. A risk to the nursing infant cannot be excluded. Discuss with your discussion the benefits and risk of breastfeeding while using this medication.

Make sure to share with your doctor a list of all medicines that you are currently taking before you start using Isotrexin gel. Similarly, do not start taking a new medicine unless your doctor makes sure that the combination is safe.

Do not use other acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide at the same time as Isotrexin because it could make the medicine less effective. If you need to apply a product that contains benzoyl peroxide, use it at another time of the day.
