Minocin is an antibiotic medicine that is used in the treatment of acne.

The spots that we often associate with having acne are actually a result of whiteheads and blackheads (that acne in its mildest form causes) becoming infected. The antibiotic ingredient in Minocin works to treat this infection, reducing its effects and helping spots to heal.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Minocin MR patient information leaflet.

Acne can have both physical and mental effects, with spots often causing pain and irritation as well as embarrassment and self-consciousness. Treating acne simply and efficiently with Minocin, allows patients to feel good again.

Minocin is a prescription-only medication. Always follow advice of your doctor and read the patient information leaflet provided in the medication packet.

Take the tablets by swallowing whole with a drink of water, with or without food. They should be taken at the same time each day to maximise effectiveness.

Minocin 100mg

Minocin contains the active ingredient minocycline, at a strength of 100mg per tablet.

The recommended dose is one capsule taken once a day, however for elderly patients this may be reduced so you should always consult your doctor.

It may be several weeks before you start to notice an improvement in your acne, since it can react quite slowly to antibiotics. For this reason, it’s important to keep taking the medication as long as your doctor has prescribed it, however you should have your treatment reviewed if you’ve noticed no changes after 6 months.

If you forget to take your Minocin tablet then you should take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. In this case, skip the forgotten dose and move straight onto the next one. Don’t worry but don’t double up on your dose to make up for a missed one.

If you take more Minocin than you should, then contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Before taking Minocin, you should always first consult your doctor. You should not take Minocin if any of the following apply to you:

  • you have had an allergic reaction to any tetracycline antibiotic in the past, or any of the components of this medicine
  • you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying for a baby
  • the person that the medicine has been prescribed for is under the age of 12
  • you have kidney disease

Your prescription of Minocin may also be affected by a number of other factors, so you should make your doctor aware if any of the following apply:

  • you have a condition called systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or myasthenia gravis
  • you have liver disease.

Like many medications with active ingredients, Minocin can affect or be affected by other medicines. Particular medications that you may experience this with include the following:

  • anticoagulants e.g. warfarin
  • penicillin antibiotics e.g. amoxicillin
  • isotretinoin (or other retinoids or retinol)
  • quinapril, ergotamine, methysergide,
  • indigestion remedies,
  • vitamins or any preparations containing iron, calcium, aluminium, magnesium, bismuth or zinc salts
  • diuretics (to regulate body water content)
  • any other medicines including those that you have bought without a prescription

If you are taking any of the above medications, then you should make your doctor aware so that they can advise whether or not Minocin will be the best course of action for you.

You should also make your doctor aware if you are taking the contraceptive pill, before beginning treatment with Minocin. This is because the possible side effects (various stomach upsets) could interrupt effectiveness of your pill and you may need to use additional contraception during this time.

The most common side effects of using Minocin include:

  • Stomach upsets, diarrhoea, sickness, loss of appetite or sore mouth
  • Headache, dizziness,
  • Hearing problems such as ringing in the ears
  • Light-headedness, or unsteadiness
  • Skin problems such as rashes, increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, itching, redness, scaling or blistering
