What is Telfast?
Telfast is an antihistamine. Telfast tablets contain fexofenadine hydrochloride 120 mg per dose. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis or hay fever. Telfast is an effective antihistamine especially if you have previously tried other non-prescription antihistamines without success. You can take Telfast alongside a nasal spray for hay fever and eyed drops when necessary.
Telfast is used to treat hay fever in adults and children who are six years of age and over. It is also used for the treatment of long-term itchy nettle-type hives or rash in adults and adolescents twelve years old and over.
Telfast is only available on prescription in the UK. You cannot purchase this medication over the counter.
How does Telfast work?
Telfast contains fexofenadine hydrochloride, a type of non-sedating antihistamine. It works by preventing the actions of histamine, a substance naturally produced by the body in response to foreign substances such as pollen. Histamine acts on the histamine receptors in the cells, causing a chain reaction that results in allergy symptoms.
In allergic reactions such as hay fever, histamine usually leads to the inflammation of the nose, eyes, or airways, which results in watery, itchy eyes, a runny or blocked nose, and sneezing. In allergic skin reactions, histamine causes the skin to be inflamed, to form rashes, and become itchy.
Fexofenadine blocks the histamine receptors and effectively stops the chain reaction that causes the allergy symptoms. Fexofenadine usually starts becoming effective within half an hour to an hour after taking a dose.
Fexofenadine also relieves itchy skin rash called idiopathic urticaria, which is similar to the nettle-type of hives or rash that is a common symptom when you get a skin reaction for no apparent cause. Fexofenadine blocks the actions of histamine to relieve the itching and reduces the rash that is common with this condition.
What are the benefits of using Telfast?
The main benefit of using Telfast is the relief it provides against the symptoms of hay fever and other allergic reactions. The active ingredient of Telfast – Fexofenadine – effectively blocks the action of histamine to effectively prevent the inflammation, itching, and other symptoms of hay fever.
How do I use Telfast?
For allergic rhinitis, your doctor may suggest that you take a dose of Telfast only when needed in order to reduce the occasional allergy symptoms. Your doctor may also suggest that you take a dose if you anticipate that you will get the symptoms of hay fever, such as when you became aware that there is an impending high pollen count. If the symptoms of allergic rhinitis are more persistent or frequent, your doctor may recommend that you take Telfast regularly every day during the pollen season in order to prevent your symptoms.
For chronic urticaria, your doctor will ask you to regularly take a dose every day for a certain period of time until the rash shows improvement.
Telfast tablets should be swallowed whole with a sip of water before you eat your meal. This medication is most effective if taken every day for persistent symptoms of allergic reactions. Do not double the dose of Telfast if you miss a dose. Do not compensate for a missed dose.
For hay fever in children aged six to eleven years the recommended Telfast dose is one 30 mg tablet taken twice a day, one in the morning and another one in the evening.
For hay fever in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over the recommended dose is one 120 mg tablets taken once daily.
For the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over the recommended dose is one 180 mg tablet taken once daily.
Side effects & precautions
Medicines and their possible side effects affect individual users differently. Not everyone who uses Telfast will experience the possible side effects.
The following are the common side effects of Telfast:
- A headache
- Feeling sick
The following are the side effects of Telfast with unknown frequency:
- Sleep disturbances
- Difficulty sleeping
- Awareness of your heartbeat
- Increased heart rate
- Skin reactions such as itching and rash
- Allergic reactions to the medicine, which may likely cause difficulty of breathing, chest tightness, flushing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Telfast is a non-sedating or non-drowsy antihistamine as it does not enter the brain in significant amounts, hence it will unlike cause drowsiness. However, there are some people who may experience feeling drowsiness after taking the medicine. Make sure that you know or your child will react to the medication before performing potentially hazardous activities like driving a vehicle, cycling, or operating machinery.
If you find Telfast makes you sleepy, you should avoid consuming alcohol with the medication, as it could make sleepiness worse.
If you are scheduled to have any patch or skin prick tests to diagnose allergies, you should stop taking Telfast for at least three days before the tests. Antihistamines can lessen or prevent the skin reactions that indicate an allergy, making the test results unreliable.
The following should not take Telfast:
- Children who are under six years of age.
- People who intolerant or allergic to any ingredients of Telfast.
The following might need a lower dose of Telfast or extra monitoring:
- Elderly people
- Those with history of heart disease
- Those who suffer from epilepsy
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you start taking Telfast.
Medicines that act locally, such as a nasal spray, are the better option for the treatment of the symptoms of hay fever in pregnant women. Telfast is not usually recommended to pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh any possible risk to the developing baby. Get further advice from your doctor.
Telfast only passes into the breast milk in small amounts. Get advice from your doctor about taking Telfast if you are breastfeeding. He may recommend other medicines for your condition.
Make sure to share with your doctor a list of all medicines that you are currently taking or have recently taken before you start taking Telfast. Similarly, check first with your doctor before you start any new medication while you are taking Telfast.
You should not take any antacids that contain aluminium or magnesium within two hours after you take a dose of Telfast. These antacids may decrease the absorption of Telfast from the gut, making it less effective.
