Acne

UK Meds asked our favorite doctor, Dr. Christian Jessen, to explain Acne. Below is what he has to say.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the oil glands in your skin, resulting in whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, nodules and even painful cysts. It most commonly occurs during puberty but it can appear at any age. It's certainly the most common skin problem with at least 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 years suffering from it at some time.

Acne isn't dangerous, but it can be uncomfortable and psychologically distressing, and it can also lead to scars. Mild acne can be treated with over the counter medicines containing benzoil peroxide or salicylic acid, which helps to clear the blocked oil glands. Moderate to severe acne usually needs stronger medicines to be treated effectively, using oral antibiotics and also gels and creams which contain the same ingredients as over the counter treatments, but in stronger doses and they are often combined with an antibiotic.

If you're suffering from moderate to severe acne and you would like a prescription for stronger medication such as Duac, Minocin or Oxytetracycline, then UK Meds can assist you through their online doctor service.

Oxytetracycline

Oxytetracycline works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to produce proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers. It therefore stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria are killed by the immune system or eventually die. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria. However, some strains of bacteria have developed resistance to this antibiotic, which has reduced its effectiveness for treating some types of infection.

Oxytetracycline is still used to treat infections caused by chlamydia (eg the chest infection psittacosis, the eye infection trachoma, and the genital infection urethritis) and infections caused by mycoplasma organisms (eg pneumonia). Tetracycline can be used to treat flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, due to its activity against the bacteria usually responsible, Haemophilus influenzae. It is also used to treat other rarer infections, such as those caused by a group of micro-organisms called rickettsiae (eg Q fever, Rocky mountain spotted fever) and those caused by Brucella bacteria (brucellosis).

It is a type of medicine called a tetracycline antibiotic. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against a wide variety of bacteria. It is therefore used to treat a variety of commonly-occurring bacterial infections. It is a prescription-only medicine.

What is Oxytetracycline?

It is an antibiotic. Space out your doses during the day and make sure you continue to take it until you finish the course prescribed. The absorption is adversely affected by food and dairy products. It is important that you take either one hour before a meal, or wait until two hours afterwards. Do not drink milk during the two hours before you take the pills, or for two hours afterwards.

It is used to treat a wide range of infections, including:
  • Respiratory infections such as pneumonia, middle ear infection, acute bronchitis;
  • Urinary infections such as bladder infection;
  • STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

Oxytetracycline is also commonly used to treat skin infections such as acne and rosacea (facial redness possibly accompanied by bumps, spots and small widened blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin).

It is an antibacterial medicine. This means that it stops infections caused by germs (bacteria). It is prescribed as a treatment for chest infections such as pneumonia, and also for some mouth infections. It is also prescribed for infections resulting from some types of bites, and some sexually transmitted infections. It is also prescribed for some longer-term skin conditions, such as acne and rosacea.

Tablets

Oxytetracycline Tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. (Do not take with dairy products.) This medicine should be taken on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after food. Always complete the entire course. Stopping early could cause the remaining bacteria to multiply in the body and the infection to return. It is usually prescribed as a 7 to 14-day course. Specific conditions such as rosacea may require long-term treatment.

Before you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about oxytetracycline, and will also provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you could experience from taking it.

Take exactly as your doctor tells you to. If you have an infection it is likely you will be asked to take one or two tablets every six hours, and if you are being treated for acne or rosacea, the usual dose is two pills twice daily. Your doctor or pharmacist will tell you which dose is right for you, and this information will also be printed on the label of the pack to remind you about what was said to you.

How Does Oxytetracycline Work?

The medication is in the form of a tablet that is used in the efficient treatment of various conditions but primarily used in treating acne vulgaris and rosacea outbreaks and leaves a smoother looking skin. It is categorized under tetracycline antibiotic. It is proven to help diminish inflammation caused by acne. It also reduces breakouts.

The active ingredient is known as Oxytetracycline dihydrate. It aims for bacteria called Propionibacterium Acnes which is connected with acne infections.

It works by limiting the ability of bacteria to multiply by stopping their ability to produce proteins that help them flouris. This efficiently treats infection, reduces inflammation of the skin’s sebaceous glands and heals the remaining acne leaving clearer skin.
