Norethisterone

Norethistherone is a drug primarily used as a hormonal replacement therapy when in used in conjunction with estrogen or as a means to delay one’s menstrual period. Also known as norethindrone, this medication is a highly effective progestogen hormone which affects the uterus by stopping it from bleeding. Since it is a synthetic and pure form of progestogen, it also has a bit of androgenic effects as well as some weak estrogenic effects in the body.

What is Norethisterone?

Norethisterone tablets are pills to stop your period. They can be used to delay your period, for example when going on holiday. The tablets need to be taken three days before you expect your period to begin and delay your period until three days after you have taken the last tablet.

It also has some androgenic effects and some weak oestrogenic activity. Naturally occurring progestogens are the hormones that maintain the lining of the uterus. At the time before a period, the level of progestogen hormone falls and this causes the lining of the uterus to be shed as menstrual period. By taking these tablets the levels of progestogens are kept artificially high, and so the period does not start.

Your need to have a prescription to buy norethisterone tablets. Our convenient service allows you to obtain both your prescription and medication online. To place your order, fill in our brief assessment questionnaire. Just like your GP, our doctor needs to check whether it is safe for you to take a period delay treatment such as norethisterone tablets.

How do I use Norethisterone?

To delay your period, one tablet should be taken three times a day. You should start to take the tablets three days prior to the expected start of your period and keep taking it until you wish your period to resume. A normal period should occur 2-3 days after you stop taking the tablets. It is a synthetic and potent progestogen hormone which stops uterine bleeding.

For women who take a "fixed dose" combined oral contraceptive pill, the same effect can be achieved by starting the next pack of the pill immediately without the normal seven day break. Taking two packs "back to back" in this way is safe if done occasionally. It is not advisable to link more than two packs without allowing a period.

How Do Period Delay Tablets Work?

Utovlan also known as Norethisterone period delay pills work in a similar way to the hormone progesterone, which occurs naturally in the body. It delays your period until the tablets are stopped. You will need to take one tablet three times a day, starting three days before your period is due to start and continuing for no more than 14 days afterwards (17 days in total). Your period will be delayed while you are taking the tablets and should start within three days of stopping the tablets.

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen similar to the natural progestogens produced by the body. Together with oestrogen, this hormone plays an important role in women’s menstrual cycle and ovulation. Hormonal imbalance can cause health issues such as menstrual problems. It restores hormonal balance in the body and so reduces these problems.

What is Norethisterone used for?

Norethisterone is used to treat menstrual disorders such as irregular periods, painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), abnormal vaginal bleeding, endometriosis and menopausal symptoms. It can also be used to delay menstrual bleeding.

How does it work?

The body also produces progestogen normally and this hormone is the one responsible for maintaining the lining of the uterus. Right before a menstrual period of a woman, the progestogen levels fall dramatically and this, in turn, causes the shedding of the uterine walls which is what we call as menstruation. This means that by taking this medication, the progestogen levels won’t drop so the uterine lining won’t shed. Thus your period can be delayed.

It doesn’t have any effect on the egg cells or the ovary which means that it shouldn’t be used as a form of contraception. Its primary purpose is to delay your period although it can be used in conjunction with oral contraceptives to schedule your period. This is useful for busy periods such as sports meets, vacations, or holidays since you can spend these events without the problem of having a period. You can simply reschedule your period to after these events.

To delay your period, you will need to take the drug three times a day. It will require some precise scheduling as you will need to take the first dose three days before your expected period. This is easy for females who have a regular menstrual cycle but women who have irregular cycles will have difficulty. As for how long, it will depend on when you want to have your period since if you stop taking the medication, you will have your menstrual period in two to three days. You can take the drug for up to 20 days which means that you can delay your menstruation for up to 17 days.
