    What is Finasteride used for?

Finasteride 5mg is used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss among male patients. It is also used to cure BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia among men with an enlarged prostate. It can also be prescribed by doctors for conditions that are not provided herein.

    Male hair loss

Many men suffer from hair loss when they reach the age of late 30’s and beyond. Treatment with Finasteride as a medication for hair loss in men can vary depending on their age, health condition, and their various responses to the treatment.

There are patients who respond faster and there are those who have to wait a while before they see positive results. It is vital that you always stay positive no matter what. But, for male patients who have been using Finasteride for more than a year and no significant improvement has been experienced with the treatment, it will not surely be effective for their use. Ask your doctor if you want other treatment options.

    How does Finasteride work?

Finasteride works by blocking the functioning of 5 alpha-reductase enzyme in the body as it is a 5 alpha-reductase inhibiting medication. This is the enzyme that converts the male hormone testosterone into the active form which is dihydrotestosterone or DHT.

As men grow old, their prostate glands are susceptible to being enlarged, this happens when testosterone is converted to its active form which is DHT. As Finasteride blocks the enzyme, it will help shrink the prostate gland of male patients. This is an organ found on top of the urethra of men, right under the bladder. By keeping the prostate gland at its original size, the patient will have better urine flow.

    Taking Finasteride

The doctor will need some blood work and lab tests undertaken on the patient to make sure he is in the best of health and is not suffering from any medical problems that can hinder his effective use of the drug. Follow the directions of your medical doctor and take some time to read the product description label and guidelines which is often found on the drug’s packaging.

    Hair loss and using Finasteride

Hair loss and Alopecia are two medical conditions that is often found hereditary. It occurs where the remaining hairs of the patient become very small vellus hair strands.

This hair loss type is very usual and has been recorded medically to be prevalent among male patients. About 80% of Caucasian men experience alopecia or hair loss later in life, and there are 65% of women who would experience this condition when they reach 50 years old and above.

But, those who suffer from this health condition show several patterns of hair loss despite being male or female. Men have the preponderance to experience hair thinning in the front scalp area and the scalp vertex. A lot of women patients would show hair thinning in their central scalp area. Patients would experience depression and stress as they experience hair loss. Many of them would use Finasteride. Finasteride promotes hair re-growth and prevents further hair loss in sufferers.

Finasteride works by blocking the functioning of 5 alpha-reductase enzyme in the body as it is a 5 alpha-reductase inhibiting medication. This is the enzyme that converts the male hormone testosterone into the active form which is dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Inhibiting DHT prevents BPH or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. If you struggle with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) a product such as Alfuzosin may be perfect for you. It also helps treat male pattern hair loss. It shrinks the prostate gland of the patient and helps treat urinary problems in male patients. The drug is also helpful in treating acute urinary retention in men or the disease where the patient is unable to pass urine and would, later on, require surgery. Finasteride is used in patients who are men only. The branded version of this medication is called Propecia.

    Precautionary measures when using Finasteride

Consult with your doctor before you take Finasteride. Never take any medication if you have allergies to any of its active ingredients and components. Keep this medication away from children and women. Finasteride can be easily absorbed in the skin, and women and children must stay away from the medication at all cost.

Finasteride must not be handled by a woman who is pregnant, or who wants to become pregnant. If a woman or child comes in accidental contact with the tablet, thoroughly wash the area with soap and water as soon as possible. For some patients, the use of the drug can lead to prostate cancer. Consult with your doctor before you take the medication.

Finasteride is specially made for male patients only. Do not take the drug if you have a medical history of depression or an anxiety disorder.
