More Information

Desogestrel Contraceptive Pill

Desogestrel is a female contraceptive pill that is known as a ‘mini-pill’. It is a progesterone-only pill that does not contain any oestrogen. Unlike other progesterone-only pills, Desogestrel has a 12-hour ‘missed pill’ window. This means that you have a 12-hour window every day to take your pill. Other progesterone-only pills only give you a three-hour window.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Desogestrel patient information leaflet.

This contraceptive pill is a synthetic version of the female sex hormone progesterone. It works by thickening cervical mucus which makes it harder for sperm cells to get through to the uterus where they could fertilise an egg. It also prevents the egg from ‘ripening’. This means that most women who use Desogestrel will not release an egg from their ovaries.

Desogestrel Pill

Before you start using Desogestrel you should make sure to thoroughly read through the information leaflet that is provided with the medication. This leaflet will include details on how to use the medication properly. Typically, you will take one Desogestrel tablet orally with water at the same time each day, however, you do have a 12-hour window in which to take the medication. You should aim to take it at the same time every day.

Here are some of the main benefits of using Desogestrel:

  • It is 94% effective at preventing pregnancy.
  • It can be used by people of all ages.
  • It can be used by people that cannot use oestrogen-based pills.
  • It is safe for use by people who are breastfeeding.

The Desogestrel that you can buy online from UK Meds contains 75mcg of medication. This is the most common strength of Desogestrel. We supply packet sizes of 84 or 168 tablets which would be suitable for 12 or 24 weeks.

Here is a handy table to let you know how you should start using Desogestrel:

How to start using Desogestrel

If you have not used any hormonal contraception in the past month:

  • Wait for your period and take it on the first day.

If you are switching from a vaginal ring, combination pill or transdermal patch:

  • Take the first pill on the first day after your seven-day break from your current contraception.
  • Alternatively, take the tablet the day after your last combination pill, or on the day you have your patch/ring removed.

If you are changing from another progesterone pill:

  • You can switch on any day.

If you are changing from the coil, implant or injection:

  • Start taking Desogestrel on the day of your next injection, or on the day your implant/coil is removed.

If you are using Desogestrel after having had a baby:

  • You can use Desogestrel between 21 and 28 days after you have given birth.
