What is Femodette?
Femodette tablets are hormonal contraceptive pills. Femodette tablets are combined oral contraceptive pills containing two active ingredients, ethynylestradiol and gestodene, which are synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone, naturally occurring female sex hormones. Ethynylestradiol is a synthetic estrogen while gestodene is a third generation synthetic progesterone.
How does Femodette work?
Femodette tablets contain two active ingredients, ethynylestradiol and gestodene, which are synthetic versions of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Combined oral contraceptives such as Femodette work by over-riding the normal menstrual cycle. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the levels of sex hormone change throughout each month. The hormones cause the ovaries to release an egg during the process of ovulation and prepare the lining of the womb for the possibility of a pregnancy. At the end of each menstrual cycle, the levels of the hormones fall if the egg has not been fertilized, causing the shedding of the womb lining as a monthly menstrual period.
The daily dose of hormone provided by the pill work mainly by convincing the body into believing that ovulation already occurred. This prevents the ripening and the subsequent release of an egg from the ovaries each month.
The hormones also thicken the natural mucus at the womb’s neck, making it difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb and reach an egg to be fertilized. The hormones also change the quality of the womb lining, making it less conducive for the implantation of a fertilized egg.
What are the benefits of using Femodette?
Femodette is an effective contraceptive for the prevention of pregnancy. The medication contains synthetic estrogen and progesterone which tricks the body into thinking that ovulation has occurred. It prevents the ripening and the subsequent release of an egg from the ovaries. Even if an egg is fertilized and released by the ovaries, Femodette is effective in increasing the thickness of the natural mucus at the womb’s neck, making it difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb, which prevents pregnancy from occurring.
How do I take Femodette?
Femodette tablets are monophasic – having the same dose of hormones in them. One tablet of Femodette is taken daily for 21 days with a seven-day break from pill-taking. During the break of seven days, the levels of hormones in the blood will drop, resulting in a withdrawal bleeding that is similar to your normal menstrual period. Start the next pack after the seven pill-free days are over, even if you are still experiencing bleeding.
The Femodette tablets come in a calendar pack with marking of the days of the week for easy remembering that you have to take the pill each day for the next three weeks, followed by a week off. You are still protected from pregnancy during the pill-free week as long as you took all the pills correctly and you start the next packet of the medicines on time.
To help you to remember taking the pills, take the pill at the same time each day. Each Femodette tablet should be swallowed with a drink of water. You can take Femodette with or without a meal.
You should start taking the Femodette pill on the first day of your menstrual cycle for the medication to protect you against pregnancy immediately. You don’t have to use any other method of contraception while you are taking Femodette. If you have a very short menstrual cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy if you will start taking the pills on the fifth day of your period.
You can start taking this pill at any time during your pregnancy if the doctor is reasonably convinced that you are not pregnant. Starting the pill at any other time in your cycle will not protect you from pregnancy. You might need to use other forms of contraception, such as the condom for the first seven days of taking the pill.
If you have given birth and you are not breastfeeding, you can start taking the pill on the 21st day after giving birth. Use extra contraception such as a condom for the first seven days.
Starting taking the pill immediately after a miscarriage or abortion at under 24 weeks will immediately provide you protection against pregnancy. If you start taking the pill more than seven days after a miscarriage or abortion, you should use extra contraception for the seven days of taking the pills.
If you forget to take a pill, or start the pack of pills one day later, take the missed pill as soon as you remember even if you have to take two pills at the same time. Then continue taking the rest of the pack as scheduled. You are still protected from pregnancy and you don’t have to use extra contraception.
If you forget to take two pills or you start the new pack two or more days late, you will not be protected against pregnancy. Take the last pill that you missed together with the pill for the day, which means that you have to take two pills. Forget about the other pill that you missed. Then continue taking the rest of the pills in the pack as scheduled. You should not have sex or use an extra barrier method of contraception such as condoms.
If you have less than seven pills remaining in the pack after your last missed pill, finish the pack and start a new pack straight away without taking the seven day pill-free days.
If you vomit within two hours of taking a pill, the medicine may not be fully absorbed into the bloodstream. Take another pill as soon as you feel better and take the next pill at your usual time. You will still be protected against pregnancy.
Femodette will not protect you against the risks of sexually transmitted infections. You need to use condoms for protection against sexually transmitted infections.
Women who are using Femodette for the first time may experience irregularity in menstruation such as spotting, breakthrough bleeding or missed period. Consult your doctor if you experience persistent bleeding. If you don’t have a withdrawal bleed for two consecutive months, use a pregnancy test before you start the next month’s contraceptive cycle.
What is the correct dosage of Femodette?
One Femodette tablet should be taken daily for the first three weeks or 21 days. It will be followed by a seven day pill-free day. After the seven days without taking the pills, you should start taking the pills from a new pack of Femodette pills.
