Gaviscon Infant is a pediatric medication that is used to treat reflux in children. Reflux is the process of the stomach contents flowing back up the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach. It can cause infants to spit up, be sick, and can cause distress.

Gaviscon Infant works by preventing reflux and regurgitation by stabilising the stomach. The active ingredients in the product react with stomach acid to form a gel. This gel will thicken the stomach's contents, making it harder for reflux to occur.

You should give your child Gaviscon Infant when they start to show symptoms of infant reflux. These symptoms include:

  • Crying
  • Swallowing or gulping after feeding or burping
  • Coughing and hiccuping during feeding
  • Bringing up milk or being sick after feeding
  • Not gaining weight

Dosage and mixing instructions will depend on the weight of your child, as well as the feeding method you are using. Infants under 4.5kg should be given one sachet, whereas infants over 4.5kg will need to be given two sachets. For instructions on how to use the medication, please read the product information leaflet provided.

Gaviscon Infant is designed to be used by children between the ages of 1 and 2. If your child is below 12 months of age then you should consult with your doctor to see whether or not you will be able to give this product to them.

Gaviscon Infant is not generally considered to be suitable for children under the age of 12 months or children over the age of 2 years. Children who are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication should also not use this product.

Gaviscon Infant does not typically interact with other medications. If you child is using other medications you may wish to speak to your healthcare provider for further advice.

Gaviscon Infant can have some side effects for some children, although they are rare. Some side effects your child may experience include bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. In very rare cases, children may experience some intestinal obstruction.

In order to fully understand the warnings that come alongside Gaviscon Infant you should ensure to fully read the patient information leaflet that is provided with the medication.
