Lucette is a combined contraceptive that works in 3 different ways to prevent pregnancy. It works in three different ways, by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries, thickening the mucus at the neck of the womb (to make it difficult for sperm to pass through), and making the lining of the womb not conducive to the attachment of a fertilized egg. More Information

Lucette Contraceptive Pill

Lucette is a female contraceptive pill that is used to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It is a combination pill that contains two synthetic versions of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The synthetic versions of these hormones in Lucette are called ethinylestradiol and drospirenone. When taken properly, Lucette is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

As mentioned, Lucette combines two synthetic versions of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone, these are known as ethinylestradiol and drospirenone. These two synthetic hormones work together to prevent an egg from being released from the ovaries. They also increase the amount of mucus in the cervix which makes it harder for sperm cells to reach the uterus.

Lucette Pill

You should make sure to read the patient information leaflet that is provided with your medication prior to taking your first dose. You should take one Lucette pill a day for 21 days. After the 21st day, you stop for seven days. During this time you will experience bleeding similar to what you would have during your period. On the 8th day you begin taking the tablet again for another 21 days, and so on.

You should aim to start taking Lucette on the first day of your period in order to be protected from the start of your treatment. If you begin taking Lucette on the 2nd-5th day of your period then you will need to use another form of contraception, such as a condom, for the next seven days to remain protected.

Here are some of the benefits of Lucette:

  • You can have a regular sex life.
  • Periods are less painful.
  • It can make your periods lighter and more regular.
  • It can help to make premenstrual syndrome (PMS) more manageable.

The strength of Lucette that you can purchase from UK Meds is displayed as 3mg/30mcg. These numbers mean that there is 3mg of drospirenone and 30mcg of ethinylestradiol in each tablet. The packet sizes you can purchase from us include 63 and 126 tablets. These are suitable for three courses and six courses of protection respectively.

Here is a handy table you can use to know how to start using Lucette:

How to start using Lucette

If you have not used another hormonal contraception in the past month:

  • Try to start Lucette on the first day of your period to be protected straight away.
  • If you start on days 2-5 of your period you should use a condom for up to 7 days.

If you are switching from using a combined contraceptive pill:

  • You should take Lucette after you have taken your last pill. Do not leave it any more than seven days.

If you are changing from a progesterone-only pill, injection, implant or IUD:

  • Take your first Lucette pill on whatever day is convenient for you when switching from a progesterone-only pill.
  • If you previously had the injection, take your first Lucette tablet the day your next injection is due.
  • If you had the implant or IUD, take your first Lucette tablet the day these are removed.

If you are starting after having had a baby:

  • If you are not breastfeeding you can take your first Lucette tablet between days 21-28 after giving birth.
  • If you start taking Lucette after day 28 then you will need to use a different method of contraception such as a condom for the first 7 days of taking Lucette.
