The NuvaRing is a brand of vaginal ring, a flexible plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina. Once inside the vagina, the ring releases the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The hormones released by the ring prevent the ovaries from producing eggs.

NuvaRing does not provide protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. It is not suitable for all women.

The NuvaRing is a small, flexible ring that is easy to insert and remove. It must be correctly positioned in the vagina in order for it to be effective. Once inserted, it should stay in place not move around.

It works by releasing estrogen and progesterone hormones. These hormones stop the eggs from leaving the ovaries and also make the cervical mucus thicket to make it difficult for the sperm to reach the eggs.

The device is normally worn for 3 weeks, and then it is removed in order to allow menstruation. A regular menstrual period will start within 2 or 3 days after the removal of the ring. After 7 days, a new ring will have to be inserted.

If a woman inserts a ring within the first 5 days after her period starts, she is immediately protected against pregnancy. It menstruation last for more than 5 days, the ring can still be inserted at this time.

If the ring will be inserted after 5 days, the woman needs to wait another 7 days to be protected. A condom or spermicide should be used until the ring’s protection begins.

The main benefit of using NuvaRing is the prevention of pregnancy. Once the NuvaRing is inserted into the vagina, it will stay in place and release the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which will prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg. The sex hormones also make the mucus thicker at the neck of the cervix to make it difficult for the sperm to pass through and fertilize an egg.

NuvaRing is said to be 99 percent effective when it is used correctly, making it as effective as the contraceptive pill.

To insert a NuvaRing into the vagina, follow these steps:

    • Wash and dry your hands.
    • Hold the ring between your thumb and index finger.
    • Press the sides of the ring together.
    • Lie down, squat, or stand up on one leg, whichever is most comfortable for you.
    • Carefully push the ring inside the vagina as far as possible. It cannot go that far, as it cannot pass the cervix.
    • Keep the ring in place for 3 weeks.
    • After 3 weeks, remove the ring by hooking index finger under the forward rim and pulling it out.

Insert a ring into your vagina five days after your first day of menstruation. Keep the ring in place for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, remove it and wait until you start bleeding.

NuvaRing is an effective means of contraception. The user must strictly follow the instructions of the doctor or the instructions provided for in the patient information leaflet that comes with the package.

The user may experience some discomfort when using NuvaRing for the first time and the while the body is getting used to the changes in hormones. These may include bleeding between periods, breast tenderness, and nausea. These side effects usually disappear after 2 to 3 months of use.

The use of combination hormones may not be unsuitable for some women.

Other side effects associated with NuvaRing include:

    • It can increase the risk of strokes or heart attacks, especially for users who smoke or who over the age of 35.
    • It can raise blood pressure.
    • There is a small increase in the risk of cancer of the breast and of the reproductive organ.
