What is Proctofoam HC?
Proctofoam HC is a combination medication used for the treatment of minor pain, swelling, itching, and discomfort caused by haemorrhoids and other problems in the anal area. Proctofoam HC has two active ingredients - pramoxine and hydrocortisone. Pramoxine is an anaesthetic that provides temporary numbing of the area. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces the swelling, itching, and redness associated with haemorrhoids and other problems in the anal area.
Proctofoam HC is a topical aerosol foam for anal use.
How does Proctofoam HC work?
Proctofoam HC combines pramoxine and hydrocortisone for temporary relief of rectal itching, inflammation, swelling, and pain associated with haemorrhoids and other anal problems.
Pramoxine numbs the area that is treated, while hydrocortisone reduces inflammation in the area.
What are the benefits of using Proctofoam HC?
The main benefit of using Proctofoam HC, a combination medicine that contains pramoxine and hydrocortisone, is the relief it provides to the symptoms associated with haemorrhoids and other problems in the anal area. This medication effectively numbs the affected area and reduces inflammation.
How do I use Proctofoam HC?
Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor on how to use this product. You should also read the patient information leaflet that comes with the product package before you start using it. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Before you apply this medication, clean first the affected area with mild soap and water. Rinse the area well and pat dry.
Shake the foam canister before applying the content. Fill up the applicator and hold it by the barrel, gently inserting the tip about half an inch inside the anus. Push the applicator plunger in order to release the foam, followed by a gentle withdrawal of the applicator. Thoroughly clean the applicator that has been taken apart with warm water. Do not insert any part of the foam canister or more than 1 inch of the applicator inside the anus. Do not use your finger or a tissue paper to apply the foam inside the anus.
If you want to apply the product to the outside of the anus, spray a small amount of foam onto a tissue paper and gently pat on the affected area. Do not cover the treated with waterproof bandages or plastic pants unless you are specifically directed to do so by your doctor. Covering the treated area may increase your body’s absorption of the medication through the skin. While the added absorption may improve how the drug works, it may also increase its risk of side effects.
Thoroughly wash your hands immediately after applying the product. Take care to avoid getting this product in your eyes, mouth, or nose. If the product is accidentally applied to these areas, rinse them with clean water immediately.
Using this medication regularly will allow you to get the most benefit from it. Using it at the same time each day will help you remember when your regular dose is due.
Do not use Proctofoam HC more often, or for longer than what your doctor has prescribed. If you have been using this product in high doses or for a long period of time, get first your doctor’s approval before you stop using it. Some conditions may become worse when the use of this medicine is abruptly stopped. Your doctor may gradually decrease your dose of the medication.
Inform your doctor if there are no improvements in your condition, or if they get worse after 3 weeks of application.
Proctofoam HC dosage
This product is usually used 3 to 4 times daily, or after each bowel movement, as directed by your doctor. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and your response to therapy.
Side effects & precautions
Proctofoam HC, like other medications, can cause some unwanted side effects, although not everyone who uses it experiences the side effects.
When you apply Proctofoam to the affected area in the anal area, burning, redness or itching may occur. If any of these side effects worsen, contact your doctor promptly.
Inform your doctor promptly if you have the following unlikely but serious side effects: change in skin appearance, rectal bleeding, signs of infection such as pus or tenderness.
In rare instances, this medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to a large amount of corticosteroid in your body. These side effects are likely to occur in children and adults who have been applying this medication for an extended period. Inform your doctor if you have the following side effects: weight loss, unusual or extreme tiredness, swelling of the ankles or feet, a headache, vision problems, and increased thirst or urination.
Tell your doctor if you have these rare but very serious side effects: signs of serious infections.
The use of this medicine rarely causes a serious allergic reaction. However, seek immediate medical attention if you have these symptoms of an allergic reaction: itching or swelling of the face/tongue/throat, itching, rash, trouble breathing, severe dizziness.
Report to your doctor if you experience any other side effects that may be associated with your use of this product.
Before you start using Proctofoam HC, inform your doctor if are allergic to pramoxine or hydrocortisone, or if you have other allergies. The inactive ingredients of this product may trigger an allergic reaction or other problems.
Share with your doctor your medical history before you start using this product, especially eye problems, diabetes, infections, stomach or intestinal problems, or liver disease.
Long term use of corticosteroid medications can make your body more difficult to respond to physical stress. Tell your doctor that you are using this product before you undergo any emergency treatment or surgical procedure.
Extreme caution must be exercised when using this product in children. Proctofoam HC must not be applied over a large area or use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants unless specifically instructed by the doctor.
Although very unlikely, this medicine has the potential of slowing down a child’s growth if used for a long time. The effect of this medicine on the final adult weight is not known. Let your child see the doctor regularly in order to monitor his height.
