UK Meds asked our favorite doctor, Dr. Christian Jessen, to explain Asthma. Below is what he has to say.

Asthma is a long term health condition where those affected have overly-sensitive airways, and it can lead to serious difficulties when breathing. Inflammation and constriction of the airways cause them to get narrower, making it harder for air to pass through. This causes a typical asthma attack which left untreated can be potentially fatal.

Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, tightness around the chest and shortness of breath. Currently, there is no cure for asthma, but there are a wide range of treatments that can help. Reliever inhalers, which are usually blue, provide rapid relief by relaxing your airways. They should always be kept on you at all times in case of asthma attack and you should always have a spare inhaler on hand.

Preventer inhalers, which are usually colored brown, contain a low dose of steroids. They take affect over time to reduce the inflammation, sensitivity and swelling in your airways. Even if your symptoms don't seem serious, you should always use your preventer inhaler (if you have been advised to) to help keep an attack at bay.

UK Meds can prescribe many different types of inhalers, including Ventolin, Clenil Modulite, Bricanyl and more. Start your free consultation with GMC registered doctors today.

What is Bricanyl Inhaler?

Bricanyl is an inhaler that contains the medicine terbutaline. It belongs to a group of medicines called beta agonists. Terbutaline is prescribed as a rescue treatment for sudden breathlessness or wheezing in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It is referred to as a reliever because it provides relief to the symptoms of breathlessness.

Terbutaline is a bronchodilator because it dilates or widens the airways. It can also be taken as a syrup or in tablet form.

How does Bricanyl Inhaler work?

Bricanyl contains terbutaline sulfate, a short-acting beta two agonist. It works by acting directly on the receptors in the lungs called beta two receptors. It causes the muscles in the airways to relax and allows the airways to open.

In conditions where there is a narrowing of the airways, such as in COPD or asthma, it is difficult for air to get in and out of the lungs. It can be made easier by expanding the opening of the airways, which terbutaline makes possible.

What are the benefits of using a Bricanyl Inhaler?

Bricanyl is an effective way of breathing easy for people with asthma or COPD where the airways are constricted, making it difficult for the air to get in and out of the lungs. Bricanyl is effective in relaxing the muscles in the airways to let it open for natural breathing. Bricanyl provides fast relief for the symptoms of asthma and COPD.

How do I use a Bricanyl Inhaler?

Terbutaline in Bricanyl is commonly taken as an inhaler device. The inhalation of the medicine allows it to act directly in the lungs where it is needed. Inhaling the medication also reduces the potential for side effects in other parts of the body because the amount of the medicine absorbed into the blood when it is taken by mouth is lower than when it is taken by mouth.

A Bricanyl inhaler is a reliever because it works quickly when inhaled into the lungs. It can be used shortly before exercising or before exposure to allergens to prevent wheezing. The medicine is effective for up to five hours after inhaling a dose.

It is very important to use the inhaler correctly, otherwise, you will not be inhaling the required dose into your lungs. Follow the instructions given by your GP and ensure you read the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet included in the inhaler's packaging.

Bricanyl Inhaler is a dry powder inhaler. You can prepare the inhaler by turning the blue grip at the base of the turbohaler as far as it will go in one direction, then turn it back as far as it will go in the opposite direction. It does not matter which direction you turn it first. Once you hear a click, it means that the inhaler is loaded and ready to be used. Breathe out entirely then put the mouthpiece to your lips and breathe in steadily and deeply through your mouth.

Rinse your mouth out with water after taking a dose of Bricanyl turbohaler. Rinsing will remove some of the medicine that may stick inside your mouth and throat, which if not removed will increase the amount of medicine absorbed into the bloodstream that may increase the possibility of side effects.

Bricanyl Inhaler dosage

The recommended dose of Bricanyl Inhaler is one inhalation as required. Do not take more than four inhalations of Bricanyl in a 24-hour period. One inhalation from the Bricanyl turbohaler will last for up to six hours.

Side effects & precautions

Medicines and their possible side effects affect individual users in different ways. Not everyone who uses Bricanyl Inhaler will experience the possible side effects.

The following are the very common side effects of Bricanyl:

  • Headache
  • Shaking or hand tremor

The following are the common side effects of Bricanyl:

  • Faster than normal heartbeat
  • Heart palpitations
  • Muscle cramps
  • Low level of potassium in the blood

The following are side effects of Bricanyl at an unknown frequency:

  • Flushing
  • Feeling sick
  • Tense feeling
  • Mouth or throat irritation
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Rash
  • Precautions

If Bricanyl does not provide relief to wheezing or chest tightness as well as usual or if you need to use it more often than usual, consult your doctor immediately. It is possible that your asthma or COPD is getting worse and your doctor might need to prescribe another medication.

Inhalers may cause an unexpected increase in wheezing straight after using them. If this will happen, stop the use of the inhaler immediately and consult your doctor. The doctor may prescribe an alternative medication.

The following individuals need monitoring by the doctor when they use Bricanyl inhaler:

  • Those with heart disease.
  • Those with an irregular heartbeat.
  • Those with high blood pressure.
  • Those with an overactive thyroid gland.
  • Those with diabetes.
  • Those with a low level of potassium in the blood.

Bricanyl should not be used by those who are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you have specific allergies or intolerances, you should check the information leaflet that comes with the product package to find out the ingredients of the medication.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Uncontrolled asthma poses more of a threat to the developing baby, making it important that asthma is controlled during pregnancy. Whenever possible, asthma medication should be taken by inhaler in order to minimize the absorption of the medicine into the bloodstream, which could increase the possibility of side effects. Bricanyl inhaler could be taken as usual during pregnancy.

Terbutaline passes into the breast milk but only in small amounts that will unlikely harm the nursing baby. Bricanyl inhaler can be used normally during breastfeeding.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before you start using Bricanyl inhaler.

It is important to tell your doctor all medications that you are taking or planning to take before you start using Bricanyl inhaler. Similarly, check with your doctor before you start taking a new medication while you are using Bricanyl inhaler.
