What is Domperidone?

Domperidone is a medicine that increases the movements or contractions of the stomach and bowel. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by other drugs used to treat Parkinson's Disease. Domperidone is to be given only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor. This medicine is available in tablet or suspension.

How does it work?

Domperidone is an antiemetic and a prokinetic medicine. It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger in the brain, which causes the feeling of nausea and vomiting, as well as increasing the movement or contractions of the stomach and intestines to allow food to move more easily through the stomach.

What are the benefits of taking Domperidone?

Domperidone improves the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bloating, and the feeling of fullness. It is effective in preventing stomach problems association with certain medications for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It helps to keep the entrance to the stomach properly closed, so that the stomach contents do not leak back up into the food pipe (oesophagus). Your child is therefore less likely to be sick (vomit) or have reflux after a meal or feed.

How do I use Domperidone?

Take it by mouth as prescribed usually 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Do not increase your dose or take more of this medication more than what is directed by your doctor. Taking this medication in higher doses or more frequent than what your doctor recommends will not improve your condition any faster but the risk of side effects will increase.

Domperidone dosage

The dose of Domperidone will be different for different patients. You should follow your doctor’s order or the directions on the prescription label. Domperidone, sold under the brand name Motilium among others, is a peripherally selective dopamine D2 receptor antagonist that was developed by Janssen Pharmaceutica and is used as an antiemetic, gastroprokinetic agent, and galactagogue. It may be administered orally or rectally, and is available in the form of tablets, orally disintegrating tablets (based on Zydis technology),[8] suspension, and suppositories. The drug is used to relieve nausea and vomiting; to increase the transit of food through the stomach (by increasing gastrointestinal peristalsis); and to promote lactation (breast milk production) by release of prolactin.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. The number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depends on the medical problem that is being treated.

The oral dosage of the tablet is as follows:

For nausea and vomiting – Adults – 20 mg three to four times daily.

If you miss a dose of Domperidone, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or go to an emergency room immediately.

Side effects and precautions

Along with the needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Not everyone who uses the medication may experience all of the side effects. If the side effects do occur, they may need medical attention.

It is necessary that your doctor check your progress at regular visits. This allows the doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you continue taking it.

If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they become worse, you should see your doctor.

Because Domperidone enhances movement in the digestive tract, it may affect the absorption and action of other medications you are taking. It is important that you tell your doctor of any prescription or nonprescription medications you are currently taking, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Do not start or stop any medicine without the approval of your doctor.

For safety concerns, breastfeeding women should not use Domperidone to increase production of breast milk.
