How long does it take for Melatonin to work?

22nd August 2019

Melatonin is a medication to help people fall asleep or stay asleep. The melatonin tablet is taken orally. When taken, melatonin reaches a maximum concentration in the blood after 30 minutes.

Most people who find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep at night take melatonin in the evening just before going to bed. However, there are those who should actually take the medication in the morning.

For people who have trouble falling asleep, melatonin should be taken 30 minutes before bedtime.

Timing counts when it comes to taking melatonin medications. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the body but it is also available as a medication. It helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

Studies have shown that taking melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime improved sleep efficiency. However, it should only be taken when the body is not producing melatonin at that time (such as when you are experiencing jet lag).

When to take it?

People who have trouble falling asleep or waking up in the middle of the night and find it difficult to fall back to sleep should take melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime.

People who usually fall asleep late but want to go to bed earlier should be taking melatonin medication 2 hours before the desired bedtime.

People who fall asleep early but who wake up early too should be taking melatonin medication in the morning.

When using melatonin for the first time, you should use the lowest possible dose of the medication, which is either 1 or 2 mg per day. If you need high doses of melatonin, the same shall be decided by your doctor.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a naturally-occurring hormone in the body. It is produced by the pineal gland. Melatonin regulates the sleep and wake cycle. The body produces more melatonin at night. The level of melatonin begins to go up as the sun goes down and begins to go down as the sun goes up. Melatonin medication is usually taken to provide relief to the difficulty of falling or staying asleep, which are the usual symptoms of insomnia. Several studies have shown evidence that melatonin helps a person fall and stay asleep.

Melatonin medications are believed to be effective and safe for long term use as they cause fewer side effects than the commonly prescribed sleeping pills.

How does Melatonin work?

The essential function of the melatonin hormone is the regulation of night and day cycles. The body begins to produce more melatonin at the onset of darkness. It is a signal for the body to get ready to sleep. Light decreases the body’s production of melatonin, which is a signal for the body to get ready to wake up. When the levels of melatonin in the human body are low, that individual will find it difficult to fall asleep. Giving that individual melatonin medication will help him fall asleep.

Melatonin is used by people when they have trouble falling asleep or staying sleep at night. It also provides relief for other sleep problems. It helps those individuals who have delayed sleep phase disorder. It is also beneficial to those individuals whose normal sleep schedules are interrupted by their work schedule or cross-time-zone travelling.
