What is Dermovate Cream?

Dermovate Cream is a topical corticosteroid medication for the treatment of skin conditions that have not responded well to other corticosteroids. 

The active ingredient in Dermovate cream is clobetasol propionate 0.05%. Dermovate Cream is a highly potent topical corticosteroid for use of adults, elderly, and children over one year of age for the short treatment only of more resistant inflammation and pruritic manifestations of skin conditions that are not responsive to less potent corticosteroids, such as recalcitrant dermatoses, psoriasis, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus, and other skin conditions which do not respond satisfactorily to less potent steroids.

How does Dermovate Cream work?

Dermovate Cream contains the active ingredient clobetasol propionate, a type of topical corticosteroid medicine. It is a potent corticosteroid for the reduction of inflammation, redness, and itching.

Skin inflammation occurs when an allergic reaction or irritation of the skin causes the release of various substances in the skin that make blood vessels to widen and result in the irritated area turning swollen, red, itchy, and painful.

Dermovate Cream works inside the skin to stop the release of the inflammatory substances. This results in the reduction of the swelling, redness, and itching and thus prevents scratching that will further irritate the skin. 

What are the benefits of using Dermovate Cream?

The main benefit of Dermovate Cream is the fast relief of the swelling, redness, and itchiness of the skin caused by an irritation or an allergic reaction.

This product is effective in stopping the release of the inflammatory substances that cause the inflammation.

How do I use Dermovate Cream?

Dermovate Cream is to be applied thinly and gently rub in using enough cream to cover the entire affected area once or twice daily until you observe improvement. You may then reduce the frequency of application of this cream or you may change the treatment to a less potent preparation. Allow adequate time for the skin to absorb each application before applying an emollient. 

Repeated short courses of Dermovate Cream may be used to control the exacerbations of the skin condition. 

Do not apply this cream to broken or infected areas of the skin, unless it is the infection that is being treated. Do not apply this cream to the facial skin unless you are instructed to do so by your specialist. Take extra care of ensuring that this cream will not go into your eyes, mouth, or nose. In case of an accidental application, rinse with cold water.

Wash your hand thoroughly after applying the cream, unless you are treating your hands.

Do not cover the area of the skin being treated with this medication with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor because it will increase the absorption of the medicine into the body and increase the risk of side effects. If your doctor advised you to use dressing after application of the cream, you should cleanse the skin thoroughly before applying the cream under a fresh dressing.

Continue using this medication for as long as recommended by your doctor. If the skin condition has not improved after two weeks of treatment, consult your doctor.

Do not use Dermovate Cream more often or for longer than what is prescribed by your doctor. 

In the event that skin being treated becomes infected, stop using this medication right away and see your doctor.

Dermovate Cream Dose

Apply Dermovate Cream thinly on the affected areas of the skin once or twice daily, as recommended by your doctor. The maximum dose of Dermovate Cream should not exceed 50 gms/week.

Side effects & precautions

Many medications can cause unwanted side effects. A side effects in an unwanted response to the medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects may be mild or severe, temporary or permanent. The possible side effects of Dermovate Cream are not experienced by every individual who uses this medication. If you are concerned about the possible side effects, discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of Dermovate Cream.

The following are the common side effects reported by people using this medication. Many of these side effects are manageable, and some will go away on their own over time.   • Eye pain if the product is used near the eye

  • Skin colour changes

  • Skin rash
  • Thinning of skin with easy bruising

There are side effects that do not happen very often, but when they occur they could lead to more serious problems:

  • Acne or oily skin
  • Burning and itching of the skin
  • Lack of healing of the skin condition
  • Numbness in fingers
  • Red, painful, or itchy pus-containing blisters in hair follicles
  • Unusual increase in hair growth, especially on the face
  • An unusual loss of hair, especially on the scalp
  • Visible lines or small blood vessels under the skin
  • Vision changes

Stop using this medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as difficulty of breathing, itching, dizziness, rash, and swelling
  • Symptoms of high levels of corticosteroids in the bloodstream such as fatigue, irritability, increased thirst and urination, and muscle weakness.

Some people may experience other side effects that are associated with the use of Dermovate Cream. See your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are using this medication.

Before you start using Dermovate Cream, tell your doctor if you allergic to it, or to other corticosteroids, or if you have other forms of allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other problems. 

Before you start using this medication, share with your doctor your medical history, especially of the immune system, poor blood circulation, and certain skin conditions.

Do not use this medication if there is an infection or sore present in the area to be treated.

In rare instances, using corticosteroid medications such as Dermovate Cream, for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. It is important to tell your doctors that you are using this medication before undergoing a surgical treatment, or if you get a serious illness or injury.

Dermovate Cream should not be used during pregnancy unless your doctor is sure that the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while using this medication, contact your doctor immediately.

Dermovate Cream may pass into breast milk. If you are a breastfeeding mother, your use of Dermovate Cream may affect your nursing baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breastfeeding your baby. 

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase the risk of side effects. Share with your doctor a list of all medications you are currently taking, including prescription, nonprescription, and herbal products to allow the doctor to check for possible interaction when you use Dermovate Cream.

Corticosteroids taken by mouth may interact with this medication.
