What is Solpadol?
Solpadol is a brand name for Co-codamol. It is a pain killer medication and is suggested for use by patients 12 years old and above. It is a drug intended to treat mild to moderate pain which is not treatable by analgesics such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol. Solpadol is a combination of two potent drugs, Codeine and Paracetamol. Doctors prescribe them to help reduce pain after surgery.
How does Solpadol work?
It works by putting interference between the elements in the body that enables response to pain or injury. These are known as ‘Prostaglandins.’ They make the nerves in the body very sensitive, hence the feeling of pain. By minimizing the levels of prostaglandin in the body, one can feel lesser to no pain at all after taking the medication.
Codeine, on the other hand, is a kind of opioid. Opioids work by copying the body’s natural pain-killing hormones known as ‘Endorphins.’ They help manage pain by blocking the pain sensation messages sent to the brain. There are various kinds of opioids and Codeine is a weaker opioid responsible for effective pain management.
What are the benefits of Solpadol?
Pain and its effects can be distressing. It can prevent one from working or performing any day to day tasks that he or she is required to do. It paralyzes the person and precludes one from being productive. In this case, Solpadol can be helpful in managing pain. It blocks the neurons that are sending pain signals to the brain making the pain go away. This allows the patient to get back to his or her daily activities without the debilitating pain getting in the way.
How do I use Solpadol?
Take Solpadol as a normal tablet; swallow with a glass of water. It also comes in capsule and soluble tablet which is effervescent and can be dissolved in water. Take the medicine as prescribed by your physician, nurse, or pharmacist. Take as prescribed by your doctor. Never attempt to stop taking the prescription without advice from your medical doctor.
The nurse, pharmacist, or doctor will advise you how to take Solpadol. The usual dose is 1-2 tablets taken every four to six hours. Take a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. The dosage for Codeine can vary from 8 mg, 15 mg, or 30 mg. Ask your doctor about a suitable dosage for you.
For adults, take 2 capsules every 4-6 hours interval, and up to a maximum of eight capsules in 24 hours. For elderly, ask your doctor for a reduced dosage. One tablet every 4-6 hours is recommended.
Children aged sixteen to eighteen years old can take 1-2 capsules every 4-6 hours or a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. Children aged 12-15 years old can take one capsule every 4-6 hours and a maximum of four capsules in 24 hours.
Solpadol is not recommended for children under 12 years and below. This is due to the fact that Codeine can result in opioid toxicity. The term of treatment is often limited to 3 days only, if no effective pain relief is achieved or where the condition worsens, ask your doctor about it. This is a prescription only medication.
Side effects and precautions
Solpadol has codeine and it produces the usual opioid side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, constipation, lightheadedness, and urinary problems. Moreover, tolerance and dependence on the drug can occur in extended use with high dosage codeine medications.
