What is Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan is a member of the class of drugs called serotonin-1 receptor agonists that works by constricting blood vessels in the brain to relieve swelling. This type of drugs reduces the substances in the body that triggers of headache pain, sensitivity to noise and light, and nausea and vomiting that are normally associated with migraine headaches. It is very helpful in the treatment of moderate to severe headaches.

It works effectively in the relief of migraine symptoms. The medication works best when taken as soon as a migraine headache starts. When taken after the headache pain had started, it will still work but may take a while before the effects are felt.

Sumatriptan is not to be used for the treatment of the ordinary tension headache, any headache that is different from the usual migraine headaches, or a headache that results in one side of the body losing movement. This medication is to be used only after a doctor has confirmed that your condition is a migraine headache.

How do I take Sumatriptan?

Take Sumatriptan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger or smaller dose than what is recommended by your doctor. Read carefully and follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not overuse it because doing so will make your headache worse.

Sumatriptan is to be taken as soon as you notice the beginning of the headache symptoms, or immediately after a migraine attack has begun.

Your doctor could take precautions by giving you the first dose of Sumatriptan in the hospital or clinic setting in order to observe if you will have serious side effects.

At the first sign of a migraine headache, take one tablet while with one full glass of water. Do not split the tablet.

If a migraine headache will not fully go away, or if it will go away and comes back, you may take a second tablet after two hours. Do not take more than 200 mg of Sumatriptan tablets in 24 hours.

See your doctor if you experience more than four headaches in a one-month period.

What is the dosage for Sumatriptan?

Take Sumatriptan as directed by your doctor. The usual dosage for Sumatriptan is as follows:

For oral tablets, the initial dose could be 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg taken once a day. If you feel relief from the first tablet, you may take a second tablet after two hours. Taking either 50 mg or 100 mg could provide greater relief than taking the 25 mg tablet. The maximum dose per 24 hours is 200 mg.

What are the side effects of Sumatriptan?

Seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following signs of allergic reaction after taking Sumatriptan:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Hives

Immediately stop taking Sumatriptan when you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Pain or feeling of tightness in the jaw, throat, or neck
  • Chest pain or heavy feelings on the chest area, with the pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, sweating, nausea, or general ill feeling
  • Sudden severe headache, problems with speech, vision, or balance, and confusion
  • Seizure
  • Sudden and severe pain in the stomach with bloody diarrhea
  • Numbness and tingling and blue or pale appearance in your fingers and toes
  • Hallucinations, agitation, fast heart rate, fever, nausea, overactive reflexes, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, or loss of coordination.

Sumatriptan may also result in less serious side effects, including a mild headache, feeling hot or cold, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, unusual taste in the mouth, and other symptoms, which you believe, may have been caused by the medication.

Sumatriptan precautions/interactions

Sumatriptan should not be used if you have an allergy to it. You should not be taking it if you have a history of cardiovascular diseases, or if you blood circulation problems, angina, lack of blood supply to the heart, severe liver disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or if your headache is different from a usual migraine headache.

If you have taken another migraine medication, do not take Sumatriptan within 24 hours after taking the other medication. Do not take the medication also when you are using an MAO inhibitor such as phenelzine, or tranylcyprtomine in the last 14 days.

Before taking Sumatriptan, inform your doctor if you have any history of kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder, high cholesterol, family history of coronary artery disease, and if you are male who is over 40 years of age or a woman who has had a hysterectomy.

Inform your doctor if you are taking any antidepressant and all the other medications you are currently taking, both prescription and over-the-counter, as any one of them could interact with this medicine.
