What is Vagisil Medicated Creme?
Vagisil Medicated Creme is a targeted treatment specifically formulated to relieve severe external intimate itching and discomfort. A lot of everyday factors can interfere with your vaginal health, including strongly perfumed soaps, tight clothes, synthetic fabrics, perspiration, and thrush. When this leads to intense itching, it can completely interrupt your daily life.
Unlike standard feminine washes or daily moisturisers, which are used to treat the underlying causes of vaginal dryness,[1] this specific product is a local anaesthetic designed to act rapidly on irritated skin, breaking the "itch-scratch cycle" so your skin has time to heal.
How does it work?
This vagisil cream works primarily through its active ingredient, Lidocaine (2% w/w). Lidocaine works directly below the skin's surface to temporarily block the pain signals travelling along the aggravated nerves. This rapidly numbs the skin, calming the inflammation and relieving symptoms such as itching, burning, and irritation within minutes of application.
How do I use this cream?
This medication is a cream that must be applied externally only, on the skin immediately surrounding the outside of the vagina or around the anus. Always wash and dry your hands before and after application. Please remember that this cream should never be used internally as a sex lubricant or to treat internal vaginal dryness associated with conditions like the menopause.[2][3]
Vagisil Application: Dos & Don'ts
| ✔️ DO | ❌ DON'T |
|---|---|
| Apply strictly to the external skin surrounding the outside of the vagina and anus. | Insert the cream internally into the vagina. |
| Wash your hands thoroughly before and after every application. | Use the cream as a daily moisturiser or a sexual lubricant. |
| Use a small 3cm to 5cm strip of cream 3 or 4 times daily as required. | Use the cream continuously for more than 7 consecutive days. |
Dosage Instructions
Squeeze approximately a 3cm to 5cm strip of cream onto your fingertip and gently smooth it over the affected area. You can use the cream as required, usually 3 or 4 times daily. Do not use this medication for more than one week (7 days). If your symptoms persist for longer than a week, you should stop using the cream and consult your doctor to investigate the underlying cause of the itch.
Safety, Precautions & Side Effects
This product is formulated specifically for external use by women and girls over the age of 12. It is not suitable for men, young children, or babies. You must not use this cream if you are allergic to Lidocaine or any of the other listed ingredients.
Because of its active anaesthetic ingredients, you should seek advice from a doctor or pharmacist before using it if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have general itching all over your body
- Are taking any other prescription medications
Take care to store the tube out of the reach of children and do not get it in your eyes. If you accidentally get some of the cream in your eyes, rinse very well with clean water and contact a doctor if you notice redness.
A doctor's overview of potential side effects:

NHS Specialty Doctor in Sexual and Reproductive Health, Dr Samantha Miller, provides a simple explanation of the potential side effects and how to manage them:
'The use of Vagisil may occasionally result in a skin reaction or sensitivity. This can cause reddening of the skin, minor swelling, blistering, or an intensification of the itch. Only use the cream in the prescribed way to reduce the risk of side effects. If you experience a serious reaction, cease use immediately and tell your doctor or pharmacist.'
