What is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a standard drug that is used to provide cure when there is an excessive amount of acid in the stomach. It is taken to treat certain conditions such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a type of condition when there is an acid reflux in the stomach and the acid goes back up into the esophagus.

Omeprazole goes by the brands Losec and Prisolec. It is taken to treat diseases pertaining to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, peptic ulcer, and gastro esophageal reflux disease or acid reflux. Its other uses are for treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Administering of the medication is done through oral and intravenous ways

It is classified as a proton pump inhibitor. These are commonly found on the lining of the stomach. They are used by the cells they are in to manufacture acid in the stomach.  The end result of the medication stems from its ability to restrain the proton pumps movement. In the end, this action produces less amount of acid in the stomach.

Excess stomach acid may result to symptoms of indigestion. This is the ultimate purpose of Omeprazole. Eventually, it prevents the flowback of the excess acid into the food pipe. This is the action that prevents heartburn from happening. Anybody with acid reflux knows how painful heartburn is. The prevention of the reflux action allows the esophagus or foodpipe to recuperate from previous episodes.

Peptic ulcers have a chance to heal faster with the help of Omeprazole because of its ability to reduce stomach acid. It works well with antibiotics that kill the H pylori bacteria in the stomach by creating a cleaner lining. With a clean lining, antibiotics can zero in easily on the bacteria.

How fast does it start working?

A good question to ask is how long does it take to start working? It all depends on the disease it is taken for. Indigestion and heartburn symptoms are dealt with in a matter of minutes to a couple of days.  There are some diseases that require taking omeprazole for a few weeks. Then there are some cases in which the patient has to take it for a longer period. Long term cases need to do so to either keep the condition under control or prevent it from afflicting the patient again.

To this day, scientists, manufacturers and doctors have no sure way of telling if the medication is safe for pregnant women. 1979 was the year it was discovered. It is found in The World Health Organization List of Essential Medicines which forms the list of the most important medicines in basic health care. It is classified under ‘generic medication’.
