How does the Wegovy pill work?

The Wegovy pill works by mimicking a natural gut hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which your body releases after you eat. Its active ingredient, semaglutide, acts on the appetite centres in your brain to help you feel fuller for longer, reduce hunger and lower food cravings. It also slows down stomach emptying, so you feel satisfied with smaller portions. Eating less over time, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, is what leads to weight loss.

Because semaglutide is a peptide, the stomach would normally break it down before it could be absorbed. To get around this, the tablet includes an absorption enhancer called SNAC (sodium N-(8-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)amino)caprylate), which protects the semaglutide and helps a small, steady amount pass through the stomach lining. This is why the tablet has to be taken in a very specific way, which we explain below, and why oral doses are higher than injectable ones.

How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?

In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, adults taking the 25mg Wegovy tablet lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% for those taking a placebo. These results were achieved alongside diet and lifestyle changes. This is a real-world result, measured across everyone in the trial, regardless of how closely they followed the strict dosing routine.

Among participants who took the tablet exactly as prescribed, average weight loss reached up to 16.6% (compared with 2.7% on placebo), and around 30% of people on the tablet lost 20% or more of their body weight. In short, the Wegovy pill only works to its full potential when the fasting and timing rules are followed, so taking it correctly makes a real difference to your results. These results build on the earlier OASIS 1 trial, which first showed that oral semaglutide could produce significant weight loss in adults with obesity.

Wegovy Pill Dosage and Titration

How do you take the Wegovy pill?

You take one Wegovy tablet once a day, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. The timing rules matter because food, drink and other medicines all reduce how much semaglutide your body can absorb. To get the full benefit:

• Take it as soon as you wake up, after fasting overnight for at least 8 hours.
• Swallow the tablet whole with a small sip of plain water, no more than 120ml. Do not split, crush or chew it.
• Wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else, or take any other tablets.
• Do not take it with tea, coffee or any other drink, as this can stop it working properly.

Can I switch to the Wegovy pill from an injection?

Yes, switching to the Wegovy pill from a weight loss injection is possible, and your prescriber will confirm the right pill dose and timing for you. The established equivalence is that the 2.4mg Wegovy injection matches the 25mg tablet. You would usually start the tablet one week after your last injection, but your prescriber will confirm this. Any switch is always done under clinical supervision.

Wegovy Pill vs Wegovy Injection

The Wegovy pill offers a needle-free, semaglutide-based option instead. The figures below come from each drug's own trials, so treat them as a general guide rather than a direct comparison. The one head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, compared tirzepatide against the semaglutide injection and found tirzepatide produced greater weight loss (20.2% versus 13.7% over 72 weeks).

Are there other weight loss tablets?

There are other weight loss tablets available, but they are not GLP-1 medicines. The Wegovy pill is the first GLP-1 tablet licensed for weight loss, while oral semaglutide, sold as Rybelsus, is licensed for type 2 diabetes only, not weight loss. Other weight loss tablets work in different ways, such as blocking the absorption of dietary fat or acting on the brain's appetite and reward centres. Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus are oral semaglutide tablets, so they contain the same active ingredient, but they are licensed for different reasons and use different doses. Rybelsus (3mg, 7mg and 14mg) is licensed to help manage type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill (up to 25mg) is the version specifically licensed for weight management. Wegovy Pill Side Effects

Less Common but More Serious

Who can take the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is licensed for adults living with obesity or who are overweight with a weight-related health condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. As a general guide, you may be suitable if you have:

• A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or
• A BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.

If you are from a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, weight-related health risks can occur at a lower BMI, so a lower threshold may apply. Your prescriber will take this into account when they assess your eligibility.

Who Should Not Take the Wegovy Pill

The Wegovy pill is not suitable for everyone. You should not take it if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding, and it is generally avoided if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or a history of pancreatitis.
