Nefopam Hydrochloride

Nefopam is a painkiller that is used to treat moderate pain, for example, pain experienced after a serious injury or operation. The active ingredient in nefopam tablets is Nefopam Hydrochloride. It can also be used to help ease those suffering from dental pain, joint pain, muscle pain, or pain caused by cancer and cancer treatment.

Nefopam is a type of medication known as a non-opioid/non-narcotic painkiller. It works by blocking pain messages being sent to your brain to help ease suffering.

This medication is designed to be used by those suffering from moderate pain caused by a number of different conditions. You should swallow the tablets whole with the help of water, and you can take it with or without food. 

The typical dose for adults and children over the age of 12 is one or two tablets taken three times a day. This may be increased depending on your condition. For those aged over 65, or if you have severe kidney failure, you may be given a lower dose. 

Nefopam can be used by adults and children over the age of 12 years that are suffering from moderate to severe pain.

This medication may not be suitable for some people. Some factors that may affect suitability include:

  • Those that have had an allergic reaction to any medication
  • Epilepsy
  • Liver or kidney problems
  • An uncommon form of glaucoma called angle closure glaucoma
  • People who are trying to get pregnant or are already pregnant

Nefopam is not recommended for women who are pregnant as there is little information known about whether or not the medication will affect your baby. 

Yes, you can use Nefopam when you are breastfeeding. Nefopam does pass into breast milk, however, it is in only very small amounts and is unlikely to harm your baby. If you think your baby is unwell or not feeding normally you may wish to speak to a healthcare professional for further advice.

Some medications can interact with Nefopam. You should speak to your doctor if you are using antidepressants such as phenelzine or amitriptyline, or any medication that makes you sleepy, gives you a dry mouth, or makes it difficult for you to urinate. 

Like any prescription medication, Nefopam can cause some side effects for some people. The most common side effects of Nefopam include:

  • Nausea
  • A dry mouth
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Nervousness, confusion or shaking
  • Hallucinations
  • Numbness and tingling sensations
