    What is Viagra?

Viagra or sildenafil is a medication for the treatment of male sexual problems. The medicine, when there is sexual stimulation, increases the flow of blood to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection.

Viagra is primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or the inability to sustain an erection to complete intercourse. It is also used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Viagra was originally discovered in 1989 while looking for a medicine to address heart-related chest pain. The medicine was approved for use in the US and in Europe in 1998, becoming a generic medication in 2017.

Is Viagra used for Erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is the most common sex problem that afflicts men, affecting as many as 30 million men. Erectile dysfunction is the difficulty of men to get or keep an erection. While many men experience some erectile problems from time to time, erectile dysfunction happens routinely and progressively, requiring treatment.

Erectile dysfunction occurs when blood flow in the penis is limited or when the penile nerves are harmed. It may happen with stress and other emotional disturbances. Erectile dysfunction may also be a warning of more serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, hardening or blocked arteries, or high blood sugar in diabetic patients.  In order to treat erectile dysfunction, it is necessary that the causes of the condition be determined.

A man achieves an erection because of the release by the nerves of chemicals that increase the flow of blood into the penis. Blood flows into two erection penile erection chambers that are made of spongy tissues, the corpus cavernosum, that are now hollow.

During an erection, the spongy tissues relax, trapping blood in the process. The blood pressure in the penis’ chambers makes the penis firm, causing the erection. After a man has an orgasm, another set of nerve signals are sent to the penis, causing the muscular tissue in the penis to contact, releasing blood back into the circulation system, resulting to the erection coming down.  When a man has erectile dysfunction, it is difficult for his penis to get or sustain an erection that is firm for sexual intercourse.

Erectile dysfunction must be viewed by men as more than the inability to get or sustain an erection. It could be a warning sign of cardiovascular disease. It could be an indicator of blockages in the vascular system. Studies have indicated that erectile dysfunction could lead to a significant risk of getting a heart attack, a stroke, or circulatory problems in the legs. In addition, erectile dysfunction affects a man’s self-esteem, which often results in depression or distress for the man and his partner.

The treatment of erectile dysfunction is important if a man aims to enhance his erectile function, improve his circulatory health, improve the relationship with his partner, and improve the quality of his life.

How does Viagra work as erectile dysfunction treatment?

Men with erectile dysfunction are usually prescribed to buy Viagra pills. The medicine is to be taken at least half an hour before sexual activity, with one hour as the most effective. The medicine loses effect after 4 hours. Viagra is to be taken only once daily.

When about to take Viagra, a man must avoid a high-fat meal because it will delay how quickly the medicine works.

Before prescribing Viagra, a doctor reviews a man’s medical history, especially for heart problems, stroke, high or low blood pressure, kidney and liver disease, penis conditions, history of painful or prolonged erection, and conditions that may increase the risk of a prolonged erection.

Using Viagra may result in some unwanted side effects such as dizziness or vision problems. It may also result in flushing, a headache, and stomach upset.

Is Viagra suitable for recreational use?

For nearly 20 years, men with erectile problems turn to the blue pill - Viagra - for relief.  Millions of men with erectile dysfunction have used Viagra since it was introduced in the market.  Unfortunately, Viagra and other ED medications are now used without a prescription by men who want to improve their sexual life, a practice that is popularly known as the recreational use of the drug.

Men who do not have any problems getting an erection still use the drug to up their sexual prowess. It a clear case of unnecessary use of medicine because they do not need it. There is the belief that a man can enhance his sexual performance by taking Viagra.

Viagra is an effective medication for erectile dysfunction but using it when it is not needed may lead to serious problems. Men with heart disease who are taking nitrates to relieve their problem may develop dangerously low blood pressure when they take Viagra.

Men should not be using this drug if it is not prescribed to them by their doctor for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
