Ventolin Asthma Inhaler—What is It?

A Ventolin asthma inhaler is typically used to relieve asthma attacks or when the patient is experiencing difficulty in breathing. It contains the active ingredient salbutamol which is fast-acting and is effective for treating symptoms of asthma. When inhaled, the drug relaxes the airways of the lungs which allows the person to breathe easier thus alleviating an acute asthmatic episode..

Asthma—What is It?

This is condition is commonly characterizes by difficulty of breathing. It usually involves the airway passages and may cause the following symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing or a rattling sound after each breath
  • Tightness around the Chest
  • Shortness of breath

The typical cause of asthma is the inflammation of the airway passages. Because of this, the lining as well as the mucosa covering the airways become inflamed and increase in size thereby causing the passageway to be narrower. This makes breathing difficult since air will have a hard time passing through. This causes the typical asthma attack and, if left unchecked, can become potentially fatal.

Ventolin—How Does it Work?

Salbutamol or Ventolin is a bronchodilator. This means that it relaxes the muscles around the airway which causes the bronchi to dilate. Since the drug is inhaled for it to work, it goes directly to the air passages and directly acts on them. This is also the reason why this medication is fast acting. This makes it one of the best medications to treat asthma so that you can experience quick relief and breathe easier immediately. Since the main action of the drug is to relax the airways, it is ideal for relieving the symptoms and preventing them from worsening. However, it won’t stop the symptom from returning which is why if you commonly experience the problem, you should seek medical consult and ask them what you can do to prevent it.

Ventolin—How to Take the Medication

As mentioned, Ventolin is inhaled to have an effect. It provides fast acting relief for asthma symptoms so it is important to properly learn how to take it. It may take some coordination to get to know how to properly use it but with a little bit of practice, you can do it properly so that it can work effectively. The following steps are how you should use a Ventolin asthma inhaler:

      1. Before using, remove the cap and shake the inhaler first.
      2. Begin by breathing normal and exhale completely.
      3. Place your mouth on the mouthpiece. Completely seal your lips around it to prevent air from leaking out.
      4. Start to inhale slowly and deeply while pressing on the button. This is usually found on top of the inhaler.
      5. Hold your breath for around 10 seconds to give ample time for the drug to be absorbed into your air passages before exhaling slowly.

This is the proper way to take one puff from an inhaler. Some people will need two to three puffs for their symptoms to be relieved. However, you should first clarify with your doctor as to how many puffs you can take to relieve your symptoms. Remember, Ventolin isn’t designed to prevent asthma since it is used to treat the symptoms and give your relief. Therefore, you don’t need to use it every day.

Spacer—What is It?

This is a device that you use together with your Ventolin asthma inhaler. It is designed to help you in taking in the medication. In most cases, people find it difficult to properly coordinate their timing of inhaling and using the inhaler so the spacer is designed to help make this task a bit easier. The following steps will help you use a spacer together with your inhaler:

      1. As before, remove the cap and shake.
      2. Insert the inhaler end into the spacer and exhale normally away from the spacer.
      3. Just as before, place your mouth over the mouthpiece and seal your lips around it to prevent air from leaking in or out.
      4. Press the button to release the medication into the inhaler and spacer.
      5. Breathe in deep and slow.
      6. Hold your breath for 10 seconds just as before to allow the medication to work before exhaling.

These steps are for one puff and you will probably need more than one to help alleviate your symptoms. As always, it is best to ask your doctor as to how many puffs you can safely take.

Ventolin—Does it Have Side Effects?

Just like any drug or medication, some people react differently to Ventolin and may exhibit the following side-effects:

  • Palpitations or Increase in Heart Rate
  • Shaking of the Hands or Muscle Tremors
  • Anxiety

It is important to note that the abovementioned side effects aren’t necessarily worse compared to the possible complications of an asthma attack especially if left untreated. That is why you shouldn’t be afraid of using Ventolin just in case you or somebody else is experiencing an asthma attack. It can actually do more good than harm.

Preventative Drugs for Asthma—Do You Need It?

Ventolin is designed to alleviate the symptoms of asthma but it can’t prevent asthma from appearing or causing you problems. For cases like these, you will need to take a different medication that is capable of giving long-term effects in dilating your airways. This can prevent the occurrence of asthma symptoms and help you control it. If the symptoms appear on a regular basis, then you should contact your doctor about it and ask whether you need preventative medication. However, even if you are using preventative drugs, if the asthma symptom does appear, you will still need an Ventolin inhaler to help alleviate it.
