What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide), pronounced “mown-JAHR-oh”, is a once-weekly injectable medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes and support weight loss. It works by regulating blood sugar, reducing appetite, and curbing cravings, especially when combined with a calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise.
What is the eligibility criteria?
Mounjaro is typically prescribed to adults who meet one of the following criteria:
- Have a BMI of 30 or higher (classified as obese)
- Have a BMI of 27 or higher and a related health condition such as:
- Prediabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Heart disease
Consult a healthcare professional to determine if Mounjaro is suitable for you.
For more information, visit our Beginner's Guide to Mounjaro.
How does Mounjaro work?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual-action GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist. These two naturally occurring gut hormones help regulate blood sugar and appetite:
- GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1): Reduces hunger and supports blood sugar control.
- GIP (Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide): Enhances insulin response and appetite regulation.
How does Mounjaro supports weight loss
- Regulates blood sugar to reduce cravings and maintain stable energy
- Suppresses appetite by mimicking fullness hormones
- Slows digestion to keep you feeling full longer
- Improves energy balance by working with the brain and fat cells
Its dual-action mechanism makes Mounjaro more effective for weight loss than GLP-1–only treatments like Wegovy and Ozempic (Nauck & D'Alessio, 2022).
How long does Mounjaro take to work?
Mounjaro starts working right away, but noticeable improvements in appetite and blood sugar may take a few weeks. For best results, follow your doctor’s guidance and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Possible Mounjaro Weight Loss Results
Clinical studies show that Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) can support significant and sustainable weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. Research suggests that people using Mounjaro may achieve up to 22.5% body weight loss over a 72-week period (around one year and four months). Many people begin to notice results within the first 4 to 6 weeks.
Real-World Weight Loss Examples from Trials
One of the largest Mounjaro studies involved 2,539 adults who received either a placebo or a weekly dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg of Mounjaro for 72 weeks. All participants started on 2.5mg once a week for the first four weeks, during which they lost an average of 3% of their starting body weight.
Between weeks 5 and 8, the dose was increased to 5mg weekly. By this stage, most participants had lost around 5–6% of their body weight.
From weeks 9 to 12, some people continued on 5mg, while others moved up to 7.5mg weekly. By week 12, average weight loss reached around 8% of starting body weight, regardless of the exact dose.
Long-Term Weight Loss Potential
Results from multiple trials, including the SURMOUNT-1 trial (Jastreboff et al., 2022), found that Mounjaro helped people without diabetes lose up to 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks. Other studies have shown:
- 15.7% weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes (Eli Lilly, 2023)
- 20% average weight loss over 18 months in broader populations (Singh, 2024)
Further evidence shows that Mounjaro can be up to six times more effective than diet and exercise alone, with higher doses leading to:
- 20.9% body weight reduction within 36 weeks
- 25.3% body weight reduction within 88 weeks (Aronne et al., 2023)
What to Expect on Your Mounjaro Journey
Mounjaro is designed for long-term weight management, not rapid weight loss. Most people see gradual, steady results that continue to build over time. How much weight you lose will depend on factors like dose progression, diet, activity level and overall health.
It’s important to remember that everyone’s weight loss journey is unique. Clinical trial results show what’s possible, but your own experience may vary. If you’re not seeing the results you expected, speak to your prescriber for personalised advice or visit our guide: Why Am I Not Losing Weight on Mounjaro?

Important Mounjaro pricing update
We know price changes are worrying. Below is a clear summary of what has changed, why it happened, and the options available to you.
Why has the price increased?
Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, has increased the price it charges UK providers. Our remaining stock at the previous price was allocated to earlier orders. Any new stock we buy now costs more, so new requests show the updated price. We have kept pricing as low as we can while reflecting the manufacturer increase.
Why did prices change before 1st September?
In August 2025, Eli Lilly limited how much stock we could buy at the old price. We ordered as much as possible and negotiated extra, but high demand meant our allocation was used. All new deliveries to us are charged at the higher cost, which is why new requests reflect the new price.
What if I ordered before the increase?
- We have reserved stock for you and will honour the price shown at checkout, subject to clinical approval.
- If you see a refund pending, your order will still be processed at the price you agreed when you placed it.
Are all treatment prices changing?
No. Only Mounjaro is affected. Prices for other treatments remain the same.
Will prices come back down?
We cannot predict future pricing. For now, we expect the new prices to remain in place.
Your options if Mounjaro has become unaffordable
- Stay on your current lower dose if it is working for you.
- Consider a lower dose which usually costs less and may still be effective. Read about Mounjaro dosing.
- Explore an alternative treatment such as Wegovy, if suitable for you. Our prescribers will advise the safest starting dose and timing.
- Use flexible payment methods. We accept PayPal, Google Pay, Visa Electron, Debit/Credit Card, and Mastercard Debit/Credit Card.
Can you offer discounts?
We run promotions where possible, but because the increase comes from the manufacturer, sale prices must reflect higher costs.
Mounjaro to Wegovy Switching FAQs
Can I switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy directly?
Yes. You should leave a 7 day gap between your last Mounjaro dose and your first Wegovy dose. Your starting Wegovy dose will depend on your current treatment and will be set by a prescriber.
Dose comparison chart
You don’t need to start over if you're thinking of making the switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy. Our clinicians can help find you a suitable Wegovy dose based on your current Mounjaro dose and tolerance. Find your current Mounjaro dose below to see the equivalent Wegovy dose.
Current Mounjaro weekly dose (mg) | Starting Wegovy weekly dose (mg) |
2.5 | 0.25 |
5 | 0.5 |
7.5 | 1.0 |
10-15 | 1.7 |
One of our prescribers will always confirm your dose is safe and appropriate before any order is dispensed.
If you are thinking about switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy, see our simple guide: How to switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy.
Will I get similar results if I switch?
Mounjaro and Wegovy work differently and their dose numbers are not directly comparable. What matters is using the right medicine, at the right dose, consistently, with clinical oversight. Many people find Wegovy effective for weight management when used as prescribed alongside lifestyle changes.
Why is a washout period needed?
The 7 day gap helps prevent overlapping effects and lowers the risk of side effects.
Can I switch mid-cycle?
Yes, if clinically appropriate. Do not use both medicines together. Leave a full 7 days between injections.

- Simply continue with your usual dose on your regular injection day.
- If you were about to increase your dose, you may wish to stay on your current level for an extra month before moving up.

Contact your prescriber if you experience severe or ongoing side effects such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.
How long a Mounjaro pen lasts
- Each KwikPen contains four doses, which lasts four weeks when used correctly.
- If kept at room temperature (below 30°C), use within 21 days.
After the fourth dose, any liquid left in the pen is not usable. This is a buffer, not an extra dose. Using it could affect your treatment or cause side effects. Learn more in why you should not use a fifth dose of Mounjaro.
What to do if you struggle with side effects or tolerance
If you have side effects such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea after increasing your dose, speak to your prescriber. They may recommend staying on your current dose for longer or lowering it until your body adjusts.
Never increase your dose without medical advice. If you have ongoing concerns, read the official Patient Information Leaflet or contact your healthcare provider.

Side effects
Like all medicines, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can cause side effects. Most are mild and improve as your body adjusts, but some can be more serious. Knowing what to expect helps you use the medicine safely and confidently.
A pharmacist's overview of the side effects of this medication and how to manage them:
![]() | Independent pharmacist and Clinical Safety Officer, Monalisa Kapinga provides a simple explanation of the common side effects of the medication and how you can manage them: "Mounjaro may cause digestive, metabolic, and general side effects, especially when starting treatment. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation are common and usually ease with time - eat small, low-fat meals, avoid rich or spicy foods, stay well-hydrated, and adjust fibre intake as needed. Burping and general stomach discomfort can improve by eating slowly, avoiding large or fizzy meals. Fatigue, dizziness, and general malaise often settle as your body adjusts - rest, hydrate, and ensure balanced meals. Head rush or fainting may be linked to low blood pressure - monitor regularly and speak to your doctor if this continues. Loss of appetite and weight loss in people with diabetes should be monitored - ensure you’re still meeting nutritional needs, and consider a dietitian review if weight loss is excessive. Hair thinning (alopecia) may occur with rapid weight loss - usually temporary, but seek help if persistent. Taste changes can be eased with mints or lozenges. For hypoglycaemia, especially if using insulin or sulfonylureas, monitor your glucose, carry glucose tablets, and adjust meds if needed. Gallbladder issues (pain after fatty meals, fever) or pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain with vomiting) need urgent review - stop Mounjaro and seek medical help. If you develop a rash, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or breathing difficulties, stop Mounjaro immediately and go to A&E or call 999, as this could be a serious allergic reaction (angioedema or hypersensitivity)." |
